A new player is entering the desktop metal 3D printing arena. SnowX, a recently launched consumer brand under Suzhou-based Rongspeed Technology, has announced its first product: the Snowpod, a desktop metal 3D printer poised to bring industrial-grade metal additive manufacturing to workshops, labs, and home studios.
Described by the company as “Your Desktop Metal 3D Printer,” the Snowpod is scheduled to launch on Kickstarter in the coming weeks, marking what could be a pivotal moment for consumer metal AM.

Bridging the Gap Between Industry and Desktop
Metal 3D printing has long been confined to industrial settings—machines costing six figures or more, requiring dedicated facilities, strict safety protocols, and specialized operators. While polymer 3D printers have become household tools over the past decade, metal counterparts have remained out of reach for individual makers, small businesses, and designers.
SnowX aims to change that. The brand was established in August 2026 as the consumer-facing division of Rongspeed Technology, a company with deep expertise in directed energy deposition metal additive manufacturing. Rongspeed recently secured a nearly RMB 100 million Series A+ funding round led by Kunlun Capital, earmarked specifically for next-generation additive technology R&D and the advancement of desktop metal manufacturing.
“We want to make creation simple again—so that every great idea can be easily brought to life,” the company states in its brand manifesto.

What Sets the Snowpod Apart
While full technical specifications remain under wraps ahead of the Kickstarter campaign, SnowX has highlighted four core pillars of the Snowpod’s design philosophy:
High Precision – The Snowpod is built to deliver the accuracy required for functional metal parts, from prototypes to end-use components.
HEPA 14 Filtration – One of the critical barriers to desktop metal printing has always been safety. Metal printing generates fine particulate matter and fumes that can be hazardous in enclosed spaces. The Snowpod integrates a HEPA 14 filter system—medical-grade air purification capable of capturing 99.995% of airborne particles—addressing one of the most significant concerns for desktop metal adoption.

Free Slicing Software – Unlike many industrial systems that lock users into expensive proprietary software ecosystems, SnowX is bundling its slicing software at no additional cost, lowering the total cost of ownership from day one.
Minimum Powder Exposure – Traditional metal 3D printers often require handling loose metal powders, which pose both safety risks and material waste challenges. The Snowpod is designed to minimize powder exposure, making the printing process cleaner and safer for desktop environments.

A Different Approach to Desktop Metal
Rongspeed’s technological foundation lies in laser wire-feed DED, a process that offers higher deposition rates and multi-material flexibility compared to bound-metal extrusion or binder-jetting systems. While most desktop metal printers on the market today rely on bound-metal filament or binder-jet technology, the Snowpod’s DED approach could enable faster builds and compatibility with a wider range of metal materials.
The challenge, as industry analysts note, lies in bringing DED’s complexity—fume management, precision control, and post-processing requirements—into a user-friendly desktop form factor. SnowX appears to be tackling this head-on with its integrated filtration, software, and design choices.

The Bigger Picture: Metal AM Goes Consumer
The timing is strategic. The global 3D printing market reached $24.2 billion in 2025, according to the Wohlers Report 2026, representing 10.9% year-over-year growth. Metal 3D printing’s “desktop-ization” has been identified as one of the industry’s most anticipated trends.
Investors are taking note. Kunlun Capital, which led Rongspeed’s recent funding round, has described consumer-grade metal 3D printing as “the next gold mine” in the DIY sector. The firm believes SnowX is positioned to become one of the very few companies globally capable of pushing consumer metal printer performance to a viable tipping point.
SnowX brings together a cross-disciplinary team of engineers from consumer electronics, smart hardware, internet, materials science, and even architecture and jewelry design—an unusual combination aimed at reimagining what a desktop metal printer can be.

Kickstarter and Beyond
The Snowpod is slated to launch on Kickstarter soon, with the campaign expected to serve as both a market validation exercise and a direct-to-consumer sales channel. The move follows a proven playbook in the consumer 3D printing space, where crowdfunding has launched numerous successful desktop machines.
While pricing and detailed specifications have not yet been disclosed, the Snowpod represents a significant bet: that there is a ready market of makers, engineers, designers, and small manufacturers who want the capability of metal printing without the industrial price tag and footprint.
Final Thoughts
The desktop metal 3D printing space has been promised for years. Several companies have attempted to crack the code, but the combination of cost, safety, and ease-of-use has remained elusive. SnowX’s Snowpod, backed by Rongspeed’s industrial DED expertise and a fresh $14.9 million in funding, may be the most credible effort yet to bring metal AM to the masses.
If SnowX can deliver on its promises—precision, safety, accessible software, and minimal powder exposure—the Snowpod could do for metal printing what early desktop FDM printers did for polymers a decade ago: unlock a new wave of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
